During the late 1990s and beginning of the 2000s the musical scene in Norway surprisingly raised up with the so called BERGEN WAVE. Not because of the amount of bands but the quality and character of their music, The Bergen Wave became strong enough to deserve a name in the history of music – although its makers don’t really like to use this term.
KINGS OF CONVENIENCE and ERLEND ØYE, RÖYKSOPP, ANNIE and some more names of the label TELLÉ RECORDS are the most relevant bands that formed the Bergen Wave. The big jump from the quiet streets of Bergen to the international scene, provided these bands with a style of their very own. And like all good things, the Bergen Wave came to stay, and not only to stay, but also to possibly influence a second Bergen Wave happening right now.
Until now Hawkon’s just unveiled the demo “1000 Questions” but… wait and see, there are things to happen. Originally from Bergen (that’s why we have our eyes on him!), he is based in London, frequently playing in many warehouse parties, making a name for himself within the right crowd. Hawkon’s music is clearly influenced by the Londoner urban vibe, with a great combination of 90’s R’n’B and some peaks of hip hop. He constantly gets compared to acts like Twin Shadow or The Weeknd.
Put Your Hands Up For Nep-Tokyo are on the daring Bergen label NABOVARSEL. The new EP Breaking Through will be released on December 13th and you will already get a pre-listen at our Bergen Night three days before.
Founding members Njål Paulsberg and Eirik Nordstrand mix Beach Boys-indebted melody with psych-rock guitar and synth flourishes. Both describe their sound as TRUE NORWEGIAN BLACK POP which is a perfect combination of eclectic and melodic sounds. Njål is also part of the Bergen super collective Young Dreams.
